Art & Design Technology

At ARK Castledown Primary School, Art and Design Technology provides all pupils with a creative outlet fueled by curiosity.   Our progressive curriculum creates opportunities for self-expression and the development of emotional intelligence.

Children will leave Ark Castledown having explored a range of media and develop their skills in drawing, painting, collage, printing, sculpture, textiles, food technology, construction inc woodwork and simple circuitry work.  All children will have found a form of communication that they are passionate to explore further in KS3.

At Ark Castledown Primary School, in accordance to the National Curriculum’s expectations, children will experiment with their ideas, their use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Art is taught through drop down days, which allows children and teachers to become fully immersed in the artist study, skills and exploration before completing their own final piece of work.

The structure of these lessons will always start with an evaluative study into an artist. Children will learn the era, style and skills of the artist.  They will then explore, experiment and practise the skills required to imitate and create in this way.  The children will then plan and create their own piece of art using the skills practised throughout the day.  The final piece is not an exact imitation of the artist, but an innovation, displaying the children’s creativity, skill and manipulation of media to respond to the topic related theme.
